Working from the road

Working while travelling becomes easier when the work has clear boundaries. A laptop and a scenic table are not a complete setup: deadlines, permissions, backups and time away from the screen all need a place in the plan.

Agree the work before the journey

Confirm the deliverables, review stages and deadlines before leaving. Be clear about the hours when you can respond and the days reserved for travel. A useful brief identifies the reader, the purpose and the format of the work. Discuss usage rights and image credits in the agreement rather than leaving them until the final files are sent.

Keep a dependable small setup

Carry the equipment needed for the agreed job and know how it will be powered and backed up. Protect accounts with appropriate security and avoid exposing confidential material in shared spaces. Check connectivity before promising a live call. A quieter, less picturesque workspace may be the better choice when concentration, privacy or an important upload matters.

Leave time to notice the place

Group administrative tasks into a manageable block and keep the rest of the day realistic. Tell collaborators early if travel disruption affects an agreed milestone. The work should not consume every opportunity to observe the place you came to document. Finish each day with a short list for tomorrow, a verified backup and permission to close the laptop.
